Dover Oak,Flagship Brewing & Bronx Brewery New York

While visiting friends and family in New York City we took the ferry to Stanton Island.Had a beer at Jimmie Steiny's Pub.I had the hopy Flagship IPA and found out the Flagship Brewery was just down the hill past the National Lighthouse Museum. The talk at the bar was could Trump solve the pee pee problem.I thought the real problem was the lack of public toilets not who could use which  one.

Everything we sampled was solidly great beer, the roggenfest, the wee heavy, the american wit.I had a pint of the summer ale. http://theflagshipbrewery.com/

At the National Lighthouse Museum the local volunteers said we should not miss the Prison Ship Martyrs Mounument, the Cloisters Museum made of reassembled European Abbeys housing the Mets collection of Medieval Art and the Bronx's Little Italy. The Martyrs Monument is located in Fort Greene Park and commemorates  the death of 11,000 American prisoners starved to death on British ships in Wallabout Bay,Brooklyn.Arthur Avenue is the heart of Little Italy and the best place to have  Tres Leches and a cappuccino.

Since we were in the Bronx,we took the bus to 138th and Cypress and walked a few blocks to the Bronx Brewery Tap Room.

We sampled their american, belgian and rye ales.We tried the the sessions and decided to take a growler of belgian. The hospitality was great and the beers quality made for a great rainy afternoon!

Friend, guide and chocolatier extraordinaire Bo Wayne took us to to the Appalachian Trail Stop on the MTA Harlem Line. The trail took us past the Dover White Oak.This massive oak was fully mature long before George Washington was sleeping in this same valley.

Laughery Creek,Great Crescent Brewery

Searched Laughery Creek Valley for some old trees that settlers would not cut down to shade live stock or use for fire wood.Saw some possible big trees up on a hill side but could not find the land owners.Got lost and ended up in Rising Sun In.Back in Aurora I stopped at Great Crescent Brewery http://www.gcbeer.com/

No luck finding any old growth I did find a real unfiltered Kolsch  in Great Crescent's  Blonde Ale! At $4.00 a pint it was the best find of the day.

I had a hunch that after a wet week two days of sun would dry out the grass enough to mow.I went back to the farm that I saw some possible finds and sure enough the bush hog and rider mower where out. After getting permission,I headed up the hill side into the woods and sure enough what I thought I saw I saw. These Oaks are on private land and require permission from the landowner to visit.

MARCH CAESARS CREEK 2013

Went back to Caesars Creek looking for the place described by a retired farmer from Athens Ohio.I found the abandoned farm and finally found the wood lot hillside overlooking Caesars Creek.I did not find the biggest buckeye tree he had ever seen. The weather went from warm and sunny to cold rainy overcast in a few hours.I will go back and see what else I can find.

FEBRUARY CALDWELL PRESERVE 2013

Spent an evening following deer tracks in Caldwell Preserve.Really not thinking of a picture but just getting a recharge sorely needed.

JANUARY CAESARS CREEK 2013

Was told by a retired farmer who lives near Athens Ohio about an Old Growth Woodlot behind some land he used to farm by Caesars Creek Ohio.We had a good laugh because we had both got dogs ditched behind his farm for not being able to hunt.Found some old growth but not the lot he described.

DECEMBER TIGHT HOLLOW KY.2012

Returned to Tight Hollow Kentucky to search for a picture.Last time I was back here was in the 80's. I was hunting Grouse with the Old Man.My son Miles and his friend Schyler made the trip.It rained all day after a very dry summer. To stay on public land required the usual bushwack. After getting good and wet we found it easiest to walk the creek. We found a dry cliff because we went light no tent. That night we were joking and talking when we heard the beginning creak of a tree coming down.We stopped talking looking out into dark.We could hear the roots ripping out the cliff face it had held for so many years. The big old pine came down with a very loud very close explosive whoomp! We thought about all the other dead trees baked dry by the Summer now soaking up the rain like a sponge. The next day the rain was freezing in the bottom of the hollow as we made our way out of the hollow.
